Points to consider:

1 - IMPORTANT: Before doing the upgrade of the VC you must make a full backup of the DB.

2 - IMPORTANT: If the VC is virtual, must make a clone.

3 - The upgrade of ESXi is very easy, you do it through the VUM.

For ESXi I recommend you to go download the ISOs customized manufacturers.
