Can access VCSA with root account, but unable to access vSphere with the same root account

I'm able to log into the VCSA (:5480) with the root password created, but I'm unable to log into vSphere (:9443) with that same root account).  It appears as though the root password was set correctly, but odd that I can log into one and not the other.  I recently upgraded ESXi hosts and VCSA to version 5.5 Update 2, but didn't think that should have any affect.  Any suggestions?  Please help.
