Damn that's a shame, I came accross this post moments ago myself as I had an issue with an NIC a few days ago..
I have to say, at least you don't have to security harden that install eh 
Hope you get things sorted, maybe if the internal NIC wont run, you could try a PCMCIA connected type NIC model?
