To Embed or not to embed PSC?

$

Hey Everyone,

We are getting ready to upgrade to vSphere 6 and a consultant was here before me and built a vcenter and a separate PSC.  I am questioning if we need to separate them?  Under what circumstances should the PSC be a separate virtual machine?

Thank you,

Matthew

external PSC gives you easy scale out and PSC high availability options, where you deploy additional PSCs in the same SSO domain as your first PSC deployment.

Embedded installations are recommended for standalone environments in which there is only one vCenter Server and replication to another Platform Services Controller is not required. If there is a need to replicate with other Platform Services Controllers or there is more than one vCenter Single Sign-On enabled solution, deploying the Platform Services Controller(s) on separate virtual machine(s)—via external deployment—from vCenter Server is required.

Upgrade version inconsistencies

Hi all,

I'm newish to the VMware world, and have a particular problem that I'm hoping someone more experienced can easily put to rest. I have an HP Micro Server N54L and it was originally setup to run a customised HP Customized Image ESXi 5.1.0 Update 1 version 5.50.26 booting from the internal USB.  Since then the USB has been updated to v6.0.0 (GA Build) via the offline upgrade procedure. However, since then when I connect to the IP address of the VMware server through IE, I am still greeted with the page stating that the ESX host is running v5.1.0.

esx home.jpg

From the cli, VMWare -vl told me that I'm running v6.0.0 GA build. All worked well so I assumed this was just a cosmetic issue and ignored it.

Last night I used the online update process to update to the most recent build, which went well, and I am now running v6 update 2 Build 3825889. VMware -vl at the cli, confirms that this is the case. However, the welcome page above remains the same, and worryingly, when I access the web client via https://<esxhost>/ui I get the below message. Again VMware -vl comfirms I am running build 3825889.

ESX Web.jpg

Should I be concerned with the disparity between the versions? Why is there this confusion, and what can I do to resolve this?

Thanks all!

When you did the upgrades did you use the HP image or VMware images?

It;s obvious that you are running v6U2 as you have the host client working on https://<ip>/ui but I suspect that the message is based on not using HP images to upgrade.

How large is your environment what are the design requirements?

If the environment is fairly small and HA is not a requirement of the design, you could use the embedded design to simplify the installation.  Also, if the staff isn't as knowledgeable an embedded PSC may be the way to go to simplify support and troubleshooting later.  With out knowing anything about your environment, I am inclined to make the recommendation to use an HA design but that doesn't fit everyone's requirements.  Read through the following links and decide which is best for your environment.

I have a small clients(3 in number) , all together i have 8 hosts.

I need to restrict access to client , If a client login to VCenter he must be able to see only his infrastructure , I mean host .storage Etc...

where to give access in order to implement above scenario?

Please let me know.

create 3 virtual datacenter in your vCenter inventory.

and assign permission on Datanceter object.

Questions about setup vSphere HA - 2 servers with different hardware spec.

Hello everyone,

I have a question about setting up vSphere HA.

Currently I have a standalone VM host server (ESXi 5.5) and would like to from HA.

But due to insufficient resource, I only got 1 new server and SAN storage, so I have to form a HA in 2 different server specs.

Is it possible to do that?

And how can I migrate the current VMs from old server to the SAN storage?

Thanks.

are you planning for same CPU vendor based second host? I guess Yes.

so answer to first question:

should be OK if you have two hosts with slightly different hardware config.

as you mentioned that you have SAN storage which will leverage shared storage between these two hosts.

if you have a plan to make use of vSphere FT as well, than it might be an issue with two different (CPU) hardware. although if you upgrade to vSphere 6 than this might not be an issue either as it has EVC - vSphere FT compatibility.

Please also make sure that you acquire vSphere Essentials Plus or higher to use vSphere HA.

Regarding second question:

Migrating current VMs from local datastores of your standalone esxi hosts can be migrated to shared datastores using various possible ways.

simplest among all is Storage vMotion migration of your existing VMs. use vSphere Web Client to do this activity.

vCenter is primary requirement for forming vSphere HA cluster so you will have access to Web Client anyway.

Thanks npadmani!

Currently I'm using Dell R420 (Intel E5-2420 x 2 + 126GB RAM), and planned to buy Lenovo 3650M5 (Intel E5-2609 + 192GB RAM).

I think there's not a slightly change on hardware config.

Actually I'm considering another plan - buy a 2nd hand R420, which one is better? Any risk on forming HA with above config (Lenovo server)?

For the licensing, we'll use Essentials Plus.

Thanks.

Hi grba, apologies for the slow reply, was away for the weekend. You're correct, I used the VMware source for the upgrades. I'll try and source the HP images and try and run the v6U2 upgrade again. Do you expect this to be the root cause?

To be honest, I doubt it but it is the only thing I can think of.

If this doesn't resolve then I would do a fresh install of ESXi, keeping storage intact do you can just import the VMs back from the datastore(s) to the inventory.
