Failed vcenter upgrade, but I cloned the old machine. Can I just power it up and start over?

I have been having a STRUGGLING time getting a vcenter 5.0 server upgraded to 5.1.  I mean struggling, now for almost a week.  It is working to a degree but VUM and SRM just WILL NOT WORK and vmware support can't figure it out either and are asking me to reinstall vcenter 5.1 server.  The web client works, the regular vsphere client works, it's talking to two ESXi servers ok, but its those little odds and ends that just will not work at all.

So prior to upgrading to 5.1, I cloned the 5.0 vcenter server.  Is it possible for me to power down the 5.1 vcenter server and power up the original cloned 5.0 vcenter server?  I know when vcenter was upgraded to 5.1 it updated some kind of "agent" I guess on the ESXi servers it was managing.  So if I power up the 5.0 vCenter will it still be able to manage those two ESXi servers?  One is 4.1 U3 and the other is 5.1.  I know I won't be able to manage the 5.1 through vcenter but then I plan to go to 5.5 vcenter since 5.1 is total junk.

I'm thinking instead of going from 5.0 to 5.1, trying to go from 5.0 to 5.5.  Yeah, true there are no SRM SRA's for an EMC Celerra NX4, but maybe its time to move to the vmware replication appliance which from my reading seems to be storage agnostic.

What do you think of these options?

1. Try to keep f'ing with a 80% working vcenter 5.1

2. Shut down the vcenter 5.1 and power up the old 5.0 clone and then upgrade it to 5.5

3. Just try to upgrade the existing 80% working 5.1 to 5.5

Thanks for your insight
