We are currently looking at migrating our ESX 4.0 infrastructure over to 5, but I am as yet undecided how to proceed. Currently the virtual center is running off a 32bit Windows 2003 install, with the database on a remote SQL cluster. We have 6 hosts, with two new hosts and licences to add (for expansion) when we upgrade.

At the moment I can see two courses of action.

1) Re-install the vCenter server with Windows 2008 (x64) and then re-install the various vCenter 4.0 components (kb.vmware.com/kb/2003493). From here the upgrade to vCenter 5 can be carried out on another day.

2) Install a new vCenter (v5), disconnect hosts from the v4 vCenter and then reconnect them to the new vCenter (I realise permissions and resource pools are lost).

Any thoughts?

Thanks in Advance.
