We've just upgraded from the free version of ESXi 5 by ordering the Essentials Kit. In the process, of course, we were able to deploy vCenter and thus Update Manager (which was the primary motivation, as patching the free version manually seemed like quite a pain). We have a Windows host that has the Update Manager installed, and we have a VCSA running on the single instance of ESXi we have deployed to date. We were able to successfully install the plugin on the viClient and scan the ESXi host for patches (needs quite a few). But, we're stuck at trying to install the patches... we when try to remediate the host, we get: "The operation is not supported on the selected inventory objects. Check the events for the objects selected for the operation."
The host says:
The host 10.0.1.80 has a VM VMware vCenter
Server Appliance with VMware vSphere Update
Manager or VMware vCenter Server installed. The
VM must be moved to another host for the
remediation to proceed.

Looking at this logically, for the host to go into maintenance mode, the VCSA would have to be suspended (apparently, actually moved), which would in turn prevent patches / updates from being deployed. Am I correct in thinking we need to have a second host, and network storage? Does an Essentials Kit / license provide for the ability to vMotion from one host to another? That wasn't really clear... yes, the web site says "vMotion" is included in the Essentials Plus, but I find it hard to imagine any point to a multi-host ESXi installation without the ability to vMotion hosts between one system and another...
