Hi, keep in mind that you need to update the vCenter Server before Hosts (best practice), and is mandatory the 64 Bits Guest OS for 4.1. There isn't limitation with VMware View 4.6 and vsphere 4.1....

In general, hardware support gets better with each version. I'm unsure why downgrading would help. If your talking about storing a VM on a local SATA HDD, this was never supported on any version.
